Hi Hi! Sorry so slow.. Alvin3 is wrapping up this month.

I took some pictures a few weekends ago on my Seagull 4A TLR Medium-format camera. It's such a beautiful piece of machinery. The swirly sketchy bokeh is just gorgeous. I think I'm finally starting to get the feel for the camera- I still need to work on getting my film out without getting light leaks. Some of them are pretty, some not. One of the rolls had been sitting in a drawer for about a year (since last Christmas!) so I'm not surprised that some of those are a little bright. I also finally figured out how to get good results out of my flatbed film scanner.

Also.. it was my birthday. (26!) And I made this dress. And danced in it.

Hi there!
What? No.. I'm still here. News you say? Well.. sure!

Hop is officially, jubilantly, and finally done! It comes out April 1st- go see it!

After Hop wrapped my boyfriend and I escaped to South America for vacation and spent two weeks in Peru having our minds boggled by unbelievably giant spiders in the rainforest, sleeping under mosquito netting, hiking 4 days to Machu Picchu, eating guinea pig, and buying lots of alpaca scarves. Pictures... soon. Soonish. (I say soonish because there's a lot of them to sort through. Like.. thousands. Hey, it was a two week trip!)

Next up: Mr. Popper's Penguins starring Jim Carrey and.. lots of penguins. Also normal working hours for a bit. Hopefully. That means drawing & stuff. Supposedly.

Dr. Sketchy's Ant-Art School

Before Christmas I went to a meeting of 'Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School'. Dr. Sketchy's is a gathering for artists who like to figure draw that has branches all across the country. It's quite a different atmosphere from the standard figure drawing fare- even in LA. A few friends & I showed up not knowing what we were in for, but within 15 minutes I found myself welcomed enthusiastically with a cup of hot apple cider & whiskey seated in an amazing outdoor garden behind someone's house in Burbank drawing a beautiful girl posing trapeze-like on hanging circus silks.

I really look forward to going to another meeting- they're held once a month in rotating locations.

I didn't do a whole lot of reveling this Halloween. This month has been absolutely insanely busy for me. I moved into a new apartment (Why oh why do I have so many books?!), turned 25, and started into overtime hours at Rhythm & Hues. So last night instead of unpacking the numerous boxes sitting on my living room floor (too numerous to think about) I played hookie from my responsibilities and went drawing. Screw you boxes.

I took a photo trip with Chris Nabholz and Sharon Marcussen to Lone Pine, CA; a tiny little town literally surrounded by national and state parks. Chris brought his strobe which we ran off the car battery.

There was a moment where I wandered away from the group in search of Lathe Arch and was surrounded by stretching planes of alien rock formations with the deepest of purple thunder clouds off in the distance. I put my camera down for a few minutes and just drank everything in- pressing in into my memory because I knew that my camera could never capture the beauty around me.
It took my breath away.

I entered a contest to design the logo for the 2010 LA Blues Exchange that's going on this weekend in Pasadena. My design was chosen & will adorn the t-shirts for the event. I'm very excited to be picked even though I will unfortunately be unable to participate because my knee isn't quite yet up to dancing.

So I've never done anything like this before. Costuming that is. I suppose that this is an art blog though and costuming, especially of this kind qualify as a sort of art.

That said... Phew! This was a lot of work! When Logan mentioned the idea of going to the Labyrinth of Jareth Masquerade Ball that was in 3 weeks and that we could perhaps make costumes for it I had no idea it would turn out like this. It was some intense nights of sewing, but completely worth it in the end. I couldn't imagine it coming out better. Not to mention the event itself ended up being a great night filled with friends, dancing, and scores of amazingly creative and enthusiastic people.

I've posted a couple more photos of the costumes and of the event on my Flickr Page.

The other weekend I met up with Ringling friends Kim & Kendra in Sherman Oaks to attend a lecture by Disney Great Andreas Deja at The Van Eaton Gallery. He talked for a bit about drawing animals and artists who inspired him as well as shared some funny anecdotes about working at Disney.

Beach Birthday

My boyfriend's birthday was this week so I put together a surprise birthday bonfire at Dockweiler Beach in Los Angeles. He's on crunch for A-Team right now so it was a little difficult working out the logistics while still keeping it a secret, but in the end of course things went perfectly, many sausages and s'mores were consumed, and a good time was had by all.

She lives out here as well now, working as a model and doing a darn fine job of it. We met up one sunny afternoon to go hike around and do a little shoot which was tons of fun.

We also borrowed some pieces for the shoot from Ela, a wonderful designer with her own line called Polyurethane Chic.

We even saw a coyote.

Once a month the Los Angeles Natural History Museum keeps its doors open until 11 o'clock. I sketched in the Hall of Birds, attended a lecture on fruit fly behavior, drank some beer, enjoyed music by DJ's and two live bands, geeked out over dinosaur bones and taxidermied animals, and had an amazing time!

Ski and Bay Trip

This past week I took a roadtrip with Logan up to Northern California. We stopped for two days in Squaw Valley on Tahoe Lake to do some snowboarding. Carrying an expensive SLR while hurtling down the mountainside is hazardous to both my camera's health as well as mine so there are only a handful of pictures from that part.

After that we headed East to spend a couple days in Sacramento, San Francisco, and San Jose. (Lots of S's!) I met up an old friend, James who took me on a tour of the Fisherman's Wharf and the ship he volunteers on, The Alma. I also had the opportunity to tour ILM with Jacob, a friend of Logan's from SCAD, and visited my friend Cara at Dreamworks PDI on the way back South. It was an amazing trip. I come back to LA feeling refreshed from the bay breeze.

Took a weekend trip up the coast to San Luis Obispo to try and outrun the rain (we didn't). At a party I did these sketches of Zeus; our host's Siberian husky.

(Pst... Pearl Art Supply on La Cienega is having a 50% off storewide sale right now! I picked up a set of gouache paints, some new Col-Erase pencils and a travel watercolor box intended for some plein air fun. You know what everyone loves more than puppy sketches? Cheap art supplies!)

The second trailer for The Wolfman with Anthony Hopkins, Benicio Del Toro, and Emily Blunt is out. The shot around 1:20 where the old guy with long white hair & a hat gets tackled was one of the ones I worked on. I'm so excited to see this project come out- it was very different then anything I've worked on before. It looks great!

The Cicada Club

In Downtown Los Angeles there is this swanky little place called The Cicada Club where on Sundays they have an amazing swing/lounge/blues band. Everyone gets dressed to the nines vintage style & goes to dance and have a drink. I'm working on learning to swing dance... it's coming slowly as both my feet seem content to stay earth-bound for the rest of my life.

So do you want the good news or the bad news first? Bad news? Okay... bad news is that I did almost no drawing to speak of during my trip. I found myself so incredibly busy enjoying Bavaria & Tuscany that I simply just didn't think to take out my sketchbook much. I'm disappointed in myself, but I do have a large number of pictures that I'm sorting through that I'll be sharing soon! (I promise that I'll edit down the thousand-some that I took to an album of choice shots!)

So good news is that I went to the Late Night Drawing Salon downtown on Friday with a couple of friends so I have a couple of sketches to share from that- hooray! Theme was '70's Sci-Fi'.

To make a long story short, Marc, a friend of mine's stepdad is Ron Clements; co-director of The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules, and the upcoming The Frog Princess. Marc invited my friend George & I to go to dinner with his family and to go see UP at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood (Which was an experience in itself- they put on quite a show before the movie has even started!). I sheepishly lugged along my Art of Hercules book & asked Ron to sign it & he offered to take it into work with him to get all the animators from the movie & his co-director John Musker to sign it as well.

I'm so excited- it's defiinitely one of the coolest things I own. Ron was so incredibley nice & humble- a great guy. It was definitely an honor to meet him & talk to him. Disney movies were such a big part of my life when I was a kid as well as after I decided I wanted to be an animator- these guys were my childhood idols!

Sorry for the overrun of Museum2 posts & absence of any real art from me for the past month or so. I've been busy wrapping up 'Aliens in the Attic' and preparing for a little vacation before coming back to R&H for another project. I'm looking forward to decompressing a little & getting some drawing time in while I'm exploring Germany, Switzerland, Austria & Italy so expect updates (or one massive art post once I get back) coming soon!

Thesis Stuff: Better Late Then Never

I never put my thesis up online or showed it around much after I graduated. This was mostly due to the fact that I was lucky enough to move right out to LA & begin a job with Rhythm & Hues Studios. To be perfectly honest, I was also very burnt out on the whole idea in general & desperately needed a break from the venture (A semester of pre-production and a rigorous year of production will do that to you!). It's been almost exactly a year now since I completed the 2 minute short and I finally got bored enough to upload my senior thesis to Youtube. Enjoy!

Today is my official wrap day on Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian! Unofficially there's still a couple of my shots kicking around in reviews, but it feels great to be at the end of the movie. Long and grueling as it got, there were so many gifted lighters on my team and I learned a lot from them.

On a suggestion from a friend I checked out The Late Night Drawing Salon held monthly from 10pm-2am, in downtown LA. The nights theme was appropriately "Green Fairies and Leprechauns" so I grabbed a dixie cup of green beer, and dusted off my 8B pencil and long unused figure drawing skills. The Salon was wonderful- people were extremely friendly and made me feel so welcome as a first timer. I'll definitely try to attend again. I highly suggest it!

I am approximately half way through my current sketchbook! I haven't kept a sketch journal consistently like this since when I was applying to art schools in high school. I have to say the payoff has been huge- I'm noticeabley quicker at doing these little studies since when I started. I just wish they weren't all of the same thing! Ahh.. overtime.
